Tutorial - males

Description

As per request from ~CHatterBOx010 :iconchatterbox010: , I quickly put together a representation of how I generally go about drawing a male body. So hopefully it helps. I may take another crack at it some time.

I used Sidonis, my Arisen, as a model for this exercise and have made it fairly large.

Typically I don't use underlines, but I tried to put something together as best I was able the way I learned to do it for myself.

So, here goes.

1. Be it an animal, robot, human or otherwise, it is generally a good idea to understand the structure that works beneath the surface. Knowing which way a joint turns and how a muscle looks when it is flexed or retracted is important.

Getting the basic structure of anatomy will allow you to emphasize and exaggerate your characters into your own style. As long as you follow the basic anatomy, you can pretty much make any character look how you want and still keep it within it's species.

2. I drew in black a basic body shape as simply as I could without making it into a series of squares and circles. With Red pencil I have highlighted the areas I pay the most attention to while drawing a male. Shoulders, hips, pectoral and abdomen. I like to highlight which direction the character will be looking in, and their brow-line. It gives me a good sense of proportion.

3. Keep in mind, that in contrast to women, men have a lower centre of gravity, so it is typical for their legs to be shorter. Male shoulders are generally wider than hips, so naturally they hold a wider rib cage. In this step, I have put in a basic idea of where this man's muscles belong.

4. The last things I draw on a character are eyes and hair. After cleaning up the baselines. I do several strokes and "un-do's" until my lines look they are all connected by one natural stroke.

And now we have Sidonis looking very unhappy to be my test subject.

For some really great references in varying body structure and human anatomy, I've listed some tutorials from others.
